NUMERICAL INVESTIGATION OF EFFECT OF MESH SIZE AND BOUNDARY CONDITION ON THERMAL STRESS OF PLATES

In this study, numerical investigation of effect of mesh size and boundary condition on thermal stress of metal plates was performed. Thermal stress calculations were performed using ANSYS Workbench finite element software. As materials, structure steel and zirconia were used in order to detect effect on thermal stress of material properties of plates. All materials have different mechanical and thermal properties. To see the effect of boundary conditions on response, the clamped-clamped-clamped-clamped and clamped-clamped-free-free boundary conditions were utilized in the calculations. in modeling, temperature of 122 °C was applied on the plates. In mesh proses, three mesh sizes were chosen as 0.5 mm, 0.75 mm, and 1 mm. The width and length of the plate were taken as 50 mm and 100 mm, respectively. The wall thickness was chosen as 0.5 mm. According to the numerical data obtained from this study, the decrease in the mesh sizes causes an increase in the maximum thermal stress value. The maximum thermal stress value obtained under the clamped-clamped-free-free boundary conditions is higher than the value obtained under the clamped-clamped-clamped-clamped boundary conditions. ACKNOWLEDGEMENT The authors would like to thank Dr. Savas Evran (Canakkale Onsekiz Mart University, Turkey) for his generous support and encouragement during the preparation of this manuscript.
